Woven Flowers - Tracks | Reversible Crochet Stitch for Bulky Crochet Projects

Today, I'm going to share with you this neat reversible crochet stitch I came up with to make a cowl for myself and our toy giraffe. I'm going to show you how to, using this stitch, make a reversible cowl, scarf, infinity scarf, or wrist warmers using mega or super bulky yarn and a crochet hook.

For a cowl or a set of wrist warmers, you will need 1-2 balls/skeins of mega/super bulky yarn and a 15-19mm crochet hook + scissors.

In the video, our "Magic Hook" used Bernat Mega Bulky Yarn and a 15mm Prym crochet hook.

Abbreviations:

st - stitch; yo - yarn over, ch - chain; sc - single crochet; bl - back loop; fl - front loop; sl st - slip stitch; r (rnd) - row/round; F - foundation.

Video Tutorial:

Pattern 1: Crocheting Side-to-Side, or in Rows:

Begin by making a slip knot.

Foundationchain an even number for a desired length of scarf or circumference - for cowls  & wrist warmers (for our giraffe's cowl, we'll chain 12); + ch1 for build-up + ch1 to begin next row.

R 1: all sc - in back loops of foundation row chains;
hook in back loop of 4th ch from hook: sc;
(ch1, skip 1 ch, sc in next stitch) across
ending row with sc. ch1 for build-up, turn.

R 2: place all sc - in front loops of r1 chains.
(ch1, skip r1 sc, sc in fl of r1 ch) across, ending the row with sc. ch1 for build-up, turn.

R 3: all sc - in back loops of r2 chains.
(ch1, skip r2 sc, sc in bl of next ch) across
ending the row with sc. ch1 for build-up, turn.

R 4 and uprepeat r 2-3 for pattern.
just like r 2: (ch1, skip st, flsc) across.

To fasten off - yo, pull up a loop, break (cut) yarn, sew sides together for a cowl/wrist warmers - no needle required!!! Make a cute bow to finish, or weave in ends.

Wrong side of work is what we want for woven flowers pattern; right side - for tracks.

To summarize:

Foundation (F): an even # of sts; each row will have 1 chain ch for build-up + 1/2 F ch and 1/2 F sc, alternating. To make a cowl for our giraffe here, you should have 1 build-up ch, 6ch and 6sc in each row.

Pattern 2 and 3: Crocheting in the Round: Spiral and Joined:

Work facing you at all times, (tubular) crochet in-the-round, bottom up; all sc in back loops:

Foundation (F): chain an even #, slip stitch in1st ch to join.

Now, for spiral crochet (Pattern 2) like the honey cowl in the video:

R 1: ch1 for build-up, blsc in same chain as sl st join of foundation. (ch1, skip 1 ch, blsc in next ch) around; end with a ch1, skip 1 ch; sc in the initial build-up ch.

(ch1, skip 1 sc, blsc in next ch) round and round until you get a desired size "tube"; sl st, fasten off. The item is reversible.

Woven Flower stitch - on the wrong side of work.

Now, to crochet in joined rounds (Pattern 3):

R 1: ch1 for build-up, blsc in same chain as sl st join of foundation.

(ch1, skip 1 ch, blsc in next ch) around; end with a ch1, skip 1 ch; sl st in the initial build-up ch.

R 2: ch1 for build-up; (ch1, skip 1 stitch <previous rnd sc>, blsc in next ch) across; sl st in initial build-up ch.

R 3: ch1 for build-up; blsc in 1st ch (not build-up) of previous rnd, (ch1, skip 1sc of previous rnd, blsc in next ch) around, end: ch1, skip 1 sc, sl st in initial build-up ch.

When the tube is complete, fasten off, weave in ends or make a bow. Enjoy!

Note: this project was originally shared, with fewer details, in my wordpress blog post: A Cowl for a Giraffe.

Happy Crocheting :)
